Back To Race List

Due to Storm Ciara, Athy Triathlon Club have taken a decision to postpone the Flat Out Duathlon from this weekend to next week in the interest of participants safety.  All race details will stay the same with a simple switch to 16th February.

Full details are available on Athy Triathlon’s website – click here for further details.

Athy Triathlon Club will host our annual Flat Out Duathlon on February 9th, 2020 at 10am. The event will take place in a new venue this year, read on for more details. The senior duathlon will be followed at 1pm in the same venue by the new Youth and Cadet National Series races for 13-17 year olds and then by our All-Inclusive Junior Duathlons. Go straight to Youth/Cadet and All-Inclusive Junior Duathlon or download Information for residents.

The Flat Out race is part of the Triathlon Ireland BMW Duathlon National Series (NS) again this year and we expect to have athletes of all abilities participating, from beginners taking part in their first event for fun to elite athletes chasing NS points. It is flat, fast and friendly. The run will take place on an out and back course on a quiet, country road. The 23km cycle is also out and back, we have a few tight corners in the first few km then it’s on to a road with few bends and not a hill in sight. We have been very fortunate in previous years to have the use of Athy College and its excellent facilities and we remain very grateful to them for hosting us for so long. However, due to feedback on the run course and the difficulty of planning an alternative course there, we felt we had to move venue. We are delighted to have gained the use of Castlemitchell GFC grounds and facilities just 5km up the road where we can continue to provide great registration, changing, shower and catering facilities so we can make sure you’re clean, dry and well fed after your efforts out on the course.

For parents taking part in the senior race, your children (age 5+) can be looked after by ATC junior coordinators while you race. They will enjoy some fun sporting activities and be cheerleaders for the race.

Entry to the senior race is available from the Triathlon Ireland website here. Please note that if you are not already a member of Triathlon Ireland (TI) you will need to register as a “Site User” on the TI website in order to sign up for the race and if you do not have a TI race licence then you will need to purchase a one day membership (ODM) from TI. Participants must have either a race licence or an ODM to race.

Entry to the Youth/Cadet and All-Inclusive Junior Duathlons are also available through the TI website. Children and teens also require either a race license or ODM. Children can be registered on the site under an adult’s account so non-TI members will have to sign up as a “Site User” be fore adding a child account from within their membership page.

Registration will take place at Castlemitchell GFC grounds (Eircode R14 HD80, Google Maps. Start/Finish and transition are also at this location.

COURSE INFORMATION

The race comprises a 3km run followed by a 23k cycle and then another 3k run over the same course.

The run (check it out on Map My Run) will start and finish in Castlemitchell GFC grounds, it is a flat, out and back route on a quiet rural road.

The 23k cycle (Map My Run) takes you from Castlemitchell GFC to Bert Cross 2km away, there are four 90 degree turns to negotiate in the first 2km, one of which is right after a canal bridge so will come at you very quickly. At Bert Cross, you will turn left and follow the Monasterevin Rd to the turnaround in Kildangan, there are no turns and few bends on this section of the course which has featured in previous years. One notable hazard is a narrow bridge leaving Kilberry, a little under 6.5km in, this will be marshalled. The road will be open to traffic, there will be marshals and Gardaí controlling traffic at the transition entry/exit point. As mentioned previously, this is a flat course Start/Finish elevation is 58m and the highest point is the turnaround at 66m. It can get windy out there though.
