A note on the charity from race organiser Charlie Curran Jnr:

The run is being organised by Charlie Curran in memory of his dad Charlie Curran (Senior) who passed away at the age 52 having suffered a heart attack.  Charlie’s chosen charities will resonate with many who have been affected by heart issues either directly or through family and friends.

There are many children in Ireland who are born with heart conditions and deal with these issues every day. Heart Children Ireland provides crucial support to these brave children and their families.

Heart Children Ireland aims to do this by

  • Giving hope to those affected by CHD (particularly after receiving a diagnosis) and reducing    the isolation that people may experience.
  • Increasing the knowledge and understanding of CHD among those who are affected by CHD.
  • Increasing awareness of CHD among the medical profession, the government and the general public.
  • Improving the treatment, services and facilities available to those affected by CHD.
  • Empowering young people and adults with CHD to take control of their health in an informed manner so that they can live more confident and independent lives.

The inspiration of this project stemmed from Cora and Tony Byrne difficulties struggling with their special needs son “Billy” and two other children “Cadhla” and “Ruby” to find a holiday resort to meet their entire families needs and allow all their children, enjoy a relaxing holiday together. They found that facilities for special needs children were very clinical and left no sense of relaxation or that sense of playfulness togetherness that children love and make a family bond. They dreamed of a resort where everyone could feel welcomed and relaxed, that they would feel they were on holiday together. A resort that facilitated all their childrens needs in a playful, relaxing and bonding friendly family experience. Facilitating an environment that nurtured siblings bonding experiences with their special needs sisters and brothers. And build happy lasting memories together.

Sadly Cora and Tony soon discovered there was no where for the whole family to go, if they all wanted a holiday to this effect in Europe. They decided to set about making their dream a reality for families to come too and enjoy special quality holiday time together. And so the Billy’s World Ireland Charity was born, to help this dream come true.

Billy their second of three children was born with special needs. Having not met his developmental milestones, and following many investigations and procedures, Billy was finally diagnosed with Pallister Killian Syndrome (PKS). This is a very rare chromosomal disorder at 13 months of age. Billy was one of only three children in Ireland with PKS. Sadly Billy passed away on March 24th, 2013, just one week short of his sixth birthday.

Thanks to the wonderful owners of “The Heritage Resort” in Killenard, Co. Laois for generously allowing us access to their hotel to develop and build Billy’s World Resort we are that bit closer to realising our dream. With €1.8 million to go, we need all the help we can get to make this dream a reality for special needs families across Europe.
